Kan Chou (Upper Division - Science)
Kan Chou was a double major at Hofstra University in biology and science education, and went on to receive his M.S. Ed. in School Building Leadership from Fordham University.
One of his favorite teachers was his AP Music Theory teacher in high school, who obviously enjoyed being in the classroom and working with students (he’s retired now!). This solidified Kan’s feelings of not wanting to be stuck in a corporate cubicle all day, and wanting to work with people.
Kan believes that students deserve to know what science is, as well as how and why it works. He incorporates opportunities for students to show their thinking—whether written or verbal--into each class. The philosophy that Jane Addams held has always resonated with Kan—that schools are inseparable from the larger society in which they are placed, and that any attempt to purposely separate the two is unethical.
